Myanmar's Thae Su Nyein has made the decision to return her Miss Grand International 2024 second runner-up crown. This comes after a tumultuous pageant experience, where she was seen visibly upset following the competition.
In a heartfelt Facebook Live, Thae explained that her tears were not a result of disappointment over her placement. Instead, she expressed deep sorrow for her country, which had invested significant hope and effort into her journey. She highlighted the collective support from the Myanmar people, who had eagerly followed her progress and actively voted for her.
Thae also addressed a controversial video that circulated online, showing her national director, Htoo Ant Lwin, forcefully removing her crown and sash. She clarified that Htoo's actions were intended to prevent her from falling, as she was feeling unwell.
Amidst the controversy, Miss Grand International president Nawat Itsaragrisil has accepted Thae's returned crown and terminated Htoo's contract, citing a lack of sportsmanship and business credibility.
Despite the unfortunate events, Thae emphasized her love and respect for her fellow contestants, particularly the winners from India and the Philippines. She concluded by expressing her disappointment over the missed opportunities for Myanmar to win the National Costume and Country Power of the Year awards.
