Tropical Storm Leon (international name: Kong-rey) is on the move, threatening areas in Luzon still recovering from the effects of Tropical Storm Kristine. While Leon maintains its strength, it's moving slower, currently positioned 840 kilometers east of Central Luzon.
Limited Impact Expected, But Caution Urged
Leon carries winds of 85 kph with gusts up to 105 kph. Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 has been raised in select areas of Northern Luzon, but PAGASA warns residents not to expect signals beyond No. 2 or 3.
Areas Under Signal No. 1:
- Eastern mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Lal-Lo, Gattaran, Baggao, Santa Teresita, Gonzaga, Peñablanca)
- Eastern Isabela (Maconacon, Divilacan, Ilagan City, San Pablo, Cabagan, Tumauini, Palanan, San Mariano, Dinapigue)
- Northeastern Catanduanes (Pandan, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, Viga)
These areas can expect strong winds within the next 36 hours, but the threat to life and property is expected to be minimal to minor.
Rain and Rough Seas Expected
Leon's outer rainbands may bring additional rainfall to Extreme Northern Luzon, while its trough could cause showers in Visayas, Mindanao, and western Southern Luzon. Strong winds are also expected in coastal and upland areas of several regions.
Rough to very rough seas are forecast in specific seaboards, making travel risky. Mariners are advised to exercise caution and remain in port until conditions improve.
Leon's Path and Intensification
Leon is predicted to initially move west before shifting northwestward towards the Batanes area by October 31st. The storm is expected to strengthen, potentially reaching severe tropical storm status by Monday afternoon, with a possibility of rapid intensification.
