The battle for the Season 2 crown of the PBA Esports Bakbakan Dota 2 tournament is set to kick off on October 24. All 12 PBA franchises, including reigning champions Converge, are participating in this second offering of the Dota 2 tournament, which is the fifth overall title under the PBA Esports Bakbakan banner in partnership with Dark League Studios.
A total of P500,000 in prize money is up for grabs among the 12 teams represented by their own players, led by eight-time PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo. Joining him are other notable PBA players who will serve as the faces of their respective esports teams. These players have the option to compete for the esports teams that make the cut after the ongoing registration and qualifiers nationwide.
Only the top 12 teams from the qualifiers will advance to the main tournament and will have the luxury of choosing their PBA franchise based on the rankings. Last season, over 300 teams participated in the qualifiers, and this year's numbers are expected to grow, with the grand finals set to be held live at a yet-to-be-announced mall in Manila on November 22.
The top 4 teams from the main tournament will advance to compete for the championship title. The tournament is open only to amateur players aged 16 and up, ensuring a level playing field.
Beyond the games, the PBA Esports Bakbakan aims to bridge the gap between physical and traditional sports and the booming esports industry. As Asia's first pro basketball league champions, the PBA recognizes the importance of this collaboration.
Dark League Studios, a leading esports organization, shares the same sentiment. With the PBA's strong brand, they expect to attract more users and fans compared to Season 1, where they had 351 participating teams. This partnership is a significant step towards bridging the gap between physical sports and esports.
