The PBA has suspended embattled NorthPort guard John Amores for one conference and without pay due to his involvement in a shooting incident in Laguna.
The league made the decision after a meeting with NorthPort officials and receiving Amores' written explanation. The suspension will be effective even if Amores and his brother are dismissed from the attempted homicide case against them.
The PBA stated that the dismissal of the criminal case will not prevent them from penalizing John Amores under PBA rules and standards. The league cited Amores' violations of the Uniform Players Contract, which states that players must conduct themselves in accordance with good citizenship, moral character, and sportsmanship.
The PBA said Amores' involvement in the incident was not consistent with the standards of behavior and image they wish to project to their fans, particularly young followers.
Although suspended, Amores can still join team practices and participate in team activities. He may be allowed to play again if he submits to counseling to address his anger and violent tendencies and obtains proper clearance. Atty. Narvasa clarified that the decisions were solely based on Amores' violation of the UPC and not on his criminal case.
The PBA's decision to give Amores a chance to return reflects their desire to help him change. Marcial and Narvasa said they view the players as their children and believe in disciplining them while also providing support. The league hopes that Amores will improve his life and become a better player and citizen.
The Games and Amusement Board is also conducting its own investigation of the incident and will arrive at its own decision.
