Zayn Malik has expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic passing of his former One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne. Payne died on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was 31.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Malik shared his devastation and disbelief at Payne's untimely death. He recalled their shared experiences as teenagers, their friendship, and the impact Payne had on his life.
"Liam, I have found myself talking out loud to you, hoping you can hear me," Malik wrote. "I can't help but think selfishly that there were so many more conversations for us to have in our lives."
Malik expressed his gratitude for Payne's support during difficult times and his unwavering friendship. He also acknowledged their differences and the challenges they faced as a band but emphasized his respect for Payne's talent and leadership.
"I lost a brother when you left us and can't explain to you what I'd give just to give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved and respected you dearly," Malik wrote. "I will cherish all the memories I have with you in my heart forever."
Payne and Malik first met as teenagers when they auditioned for the reality singing competition The X Factor in 2010. They were initially teamed up with Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson to form One Direction. While they didn't win the series, One Direction became one of the biggest selling boy bands of the 2010s before Malik left the group in 2015.

Payne and Malik had a complicated relationship throughout the years, marked by both friendship and challenges.
