Bluesky, a decentralized social media platform founded by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, has recently gained significant traction, particularly among users dissatisfied with changes on X (formerly Twitter).
Originally an invite-only platform, Bluesky opened to the public in February 2023. It offers a similar user interface to X, with features like a discover feed, a chronological feed, direct messaging, and pinned posts.
Bluesky's growth has accelerated, especially following Elon Musk's acquisition of X and subsequent policy changes. The platform's user base surged to 15 million in mid-November 2023, with many users attracted to its less chaotic and more community-oriented environment. Some users have even compared Bluesky to the early days of Twitter, highlighting its ad-free nature and focus on open conversation.
However, Bluesky's ambitions extend beyond simply providing an alternative social media platform. The platform is developing a protocol for public conversation, aiming to enable interoperability between different social networks.
This would allow users to interact with each other across various platforms, much like how email works. By breaking down the silos created by major tech companies, Bluesky seeks to revolutionize social media and empower users to connect and communicate more freely.
