The Philippine Basketball Team, Gilas Pilipinas, has officially qualified for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025. This comes after New Zealand's 81-64 victory over Chinese Taipei on Monday.
With this result, the Philippines secured a top-two finish in Group B, a prerequisite for advancing to the tournament proper, which will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in August 2025. Gilas had previously maintained an undefeated record of 4-0, most recently defeating Hong Kong 93-54.
New Zealand also qualified for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 following their victory over Chinese Taipei, improving their record to 3-1.
In the previous FIBA Asia Cup in 2022, Gilas finished in ninth place. However, under the guidance of head coach Tim Cone, the team has made significant strides. Last year, Gilas clinched the gold medal at the Asian Games, defeating China in the semifinals and Jordan in the final.
Australia, the defending Asia Cup champions, and New Zealand, the bronze medalist from the previous edition, are among the early qualifiers for the 2025 tournament. Japan has also secured a spot after victories over Guam and Mongolia.
Saudi Arabia, as the host country, is also guaranteed a place in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025.
