Iloilo City's Esplanade has been honored with the 2024 Asian Townscape Award, recognizing its exemplary urban landscape development. The award was presented during a ceremony in Fukuoka, Japan on November 18, 2024.
The development of the river park was a significant undertaking that began in 2011 under the leadership of former Senator Franklin Drilon. The project involved a public-private partnership (PPP) to implement the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Iloilo and Batiano Rivers.
Renowned architect Paulo Alcazaren designed the river park, incorporating it into the city's bike lane network. Today, the Esplanade serves as a multi-functional public space, offering opportunities for jogging, walking, exercising, skateboarding, and fishing.
Iloilo City Planning and Development Officer Ronald Cartagena accepted the award in Japan, expressing gratitude for the recognition. He emphasized that the project's focus on inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation aligns with the criteria of the Asian Townscape Awards.
The Iloilo Esplanade stands as a testament to the transformative power of urban planning and design. It has not only improved the city's environment but has also enhanced the quality of life for its residents.
