Typhoon Marce Wreaks Havoc in Cagayan

Cagayan Province, Philippines – Typhoon Marce has left a trail of destruction in its wake, particularly in the province of Cagayan. The powerful storm, which made two landfalls, brought torrential rain and strong winds that caused widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and agricultural lands.

Residents of Cagayan recounted their harrowing experience as the typhoon battered their communities. Many sought shelter as the strong winds ripped roofs off houses and toppled trees. The newly built Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office in Sta. Ana, the site of the first landfall, was not spared, with its ceiling collapsing under the immense force of the storm.

The aftermath of the typhoon revealed a scene of devastation. Roads were blocked by fallen trees and electric posts, and many homes were left without roofs. In Sanchez Mira, the second landfall site, a portion of a concrete welcome arc was destroyed, and a church suffered significant roof damage. Floodwaters inundated rice fields and homes, threatening livelihoods and displacing thousands.

Schools in the affected areas were also heavily damaged. The Buey North Central School and schools in Allacapan were left with missing roofs and walls, and a gymnasium in Pamplona was almost completely destroyed.

As of Friday, at least 13 towns in Cagayan were without electricity, and repair efforts were underway to restore power and communication lines. Over 13,000 families were evacuated to safer areas, and relief operations are ongoing to provide assistance to those affected.

Marce, the 13th storm to hit the Philippines this year, made landfall in Santa Ana on Thursday afternoon and later in Sanchez-Mira that night. The full extent of the damage caused by the typhoon is still being assessed.
