UP Diliman Employee Found Dead After Months-Long Disappearance

Tuba, Benguet: A tragic end to a months-long mystery. Irene Melican, a 35-year-old employee of the University of the Philippines Diliman, was found dead in Tuba, Benguet. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) confirmed that the victim's remains bore signs of a brutal and painful death.

Melican was last seen alive in June 2024. Her disappearance sparked a widespread search, with authorities recovering her belongings but failing to locate her. The NBI arrested her 38-year-old boyfriend in July as the prime suspect in her abduction.

A joint operation by the NBI and the Tuba, Benguet police led to the discovery of Melican's body. DNA analysis confirmed the identity of the remains. NBI-NCR Regional Director Ferdinand Lavin stated, "We had closure that this was exactly the person we were looking for, who was earlier kidnapped by her boyfriend."

The NBI believes that Melican was killed in Benguet after being seen with her boyfriend in La Union. The autopsy report revealed that she suffered traumatic blunt force injuries to the chest and neck, as well as broken ribs.

A search of the suspect's house in Pateros uncovered a disturbing scene, with numerous snakes and rats kept in boxes, along with the victim's personal belongings and other people's valuables. The NBI is now investigating the exact location of the murder and the potential involvement of other individuals.

As the investigation unfolds, the tragic death of Irene Melican serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk within seemingly ordinary relationships.
