BSP to Launch New Polymer Banknotes in 2025

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is set to revolutionize the Philippine currency landscape with the upcoming release of a new series of polymer banknotes. This move, scheduled for the first quarter of 2025, will see all denominations transition from paper to a more durable and secure plastic material.

The decision to adopt polymer banknotes is driven by several factors, including durability, security, and hygiene. Polymer notes are resistant to wear and tear, dirt, and moisture, making them last significantly longer than paper banknotes. They also offer enhanced security features, making them more difficult to counterfeit.

The new polymer banknotes are expected to feature a fresh design, showcasing the country's rich biodiversity. Unlike the previous P1,000 polymer banknote, which featured historical figures, the upcoming series will highlight endemic Philippine flora and fauna. This shift aligns with the BSP's goal of promoting environmental awareness and national pride.

It hinted that the upcoming launch of "smarter, cleaner, stronger" peso bills on social media, suggesting that the designs of the P50, P100, P200, and P500 polymer banknotes might also feature endemic Philippine animals.

The BSP's move to polymer banknotes is part of a global trend towards modernizing currency. Many countries, including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, have successfully implemented polymer banknotes, experiencing significant reductions in counterfeiting rates.

The central bank's collaboration with Bundesdruckerei GmbH, a leading global security printing company, further strengthens its commitment to producing secure and innovative currency. This partnership will leverage Bundesdruckerei's expertise to enhance the security features of the new polymer banknotes and improve the overall efficiency of the Philippines' currency management system.

As the Philippines embraces this technological advancement, it aims to safeguard the integrity of its currency and provide a more secure and convenient payment system for its citizens. The upcoming launch of the new polymer banknotes is a significant step towards achieving these objectives.
