Kanlaon Volcano Erupts, Thousands Evacuated

Negros Island, Philippines – A powerful eruption from Mount Kanlaon on December 9, 2024, has prompted urgent evacuations and heightened alert levels. Thousands of residents living near the volcano have been ordered to evacuate, as authorities warn of potential hazards such as pyroclastic flows, lava flows, and toxic gas emissions.

The eruption sent a towering ash plume into the sky, blanketing nearby towns and villages with volcanic ash. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the alert level to 3, indicating increased volcanic activity and the possibility of more explosive eruptions.

Local and national authorities have initiated massive evacuation efforts to ensure the safety of residents within the danger zone. Thousands of people have been moved to evacuation centers, while others have sought refuge with relatives and friends.

The Philippine government has deployed emergency response teams to affected areas to provide assistance and support to displaced individuals. President Marcos has assured the public that the government is prepared to address the needs of the affected population.

The volcanic ash poses significant health risks, including respiratory problems and eye irritation. Residents are advised to wear masks and protective eyewear to minimize exposure. Authorities have also warned of the potential for air quality issues and have urged people to stay indoors as much as possible.

The eruption has disrupted air travel in the region, with several flights canceled or diverted due to poor visibility and ashfall.

PHIVOLCS continues to closely monitor the volcano's activity and will provide updates as needed.

Residents in affected areas are urged to follow the advice of local authorities and evacuate immediately if instructed to do so.
