Cebu City, Philippines –  Jude Bacalso, a prominent figure in Cebu, is facing legal repercussions stemming from a controversial incident in July 2024. The Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MTCC) Branch 6 has issued a warrant of arrest for Bacalso in connection with a case of grave slander by deed. The charges originate from an altercation at a local restaurant where Bacalso allegedly publicly reprimanded a waiter for addressing them as "sir."

The incident, captured on video and widely circulated online, showed Bacalso allegedly forcing the waiter to maintain a "parade rest" position for nearly two hours as a form of punishment for the perceived misgendering. The video ignited a firestorm of debate across social media platforms, with opinions sharply divided between those who condemned Bacalso's actions and those who defended their right to be addressed according to their gender identity.

The waiter, who has chosen to remain anonymous, reportedly experienced significant emotional distress and embarrassment following the incident. He subsequently filed a formal complaint against Bacalso, leading to the court's issuance of the arrest warrant.

Grave slander by deed, as defined under Article 359 of the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines, involves publicly imputing to another a crime, vice, defect, real or imaginary, or any act, omission, condition, status or circumstance tending to cause dishonor, discredit or contempt. This charge highlights the seriousness of the allegations against Bacalso, suggesting that their actions went beyond a mere expression of personal dissatisfaction.  


The court has set bail at P18,000, providing Bacalso the opportunity to secure temporary release while awaiting trial. However, as of the time of this report, Bacalso has not issued any public statement regarding the warrant or the charges.
