Sitangkai, a municipality in the Tawi-Tawi province of the Philippines, is a unique and fascinating place.  Known as the "Venice of the South," this waterworld town is built on stilts above the sea, with four of its urban barangays (villages) situated directly over saltwater.  Located just a short boat ride from Sabah, Malaysia, it's the southernmost municipality in the Philippines, offering a blend of Filipino and Malaysian cultures.

This town is not just a picturesque locale; it's also a vital economic hub.  Sitangkai holds the title of "Seaweed Capital" in the Bangsamoro region, with seaweed farming being a major source of livelihood for its residents. The bountiful marine resources provide sustenance and income, while the proximity to Malaysia facilitates trade, with approximately 80% of goods coming from across the border.

Life in Sitangkai is intimately connected to the sea.  Bancas (small outrigger canoes) and pump boats are the primary modes of transportation, navigating the waterways that weave through the town. Walking is another common way to get around, with many pathways connecting the houses built on stilts.

For those who have lived in Sitangkai, it leaves a lasting impression. One resident, who spent 12 years of their life there, completing both elementary and secondary education, shares a nostalgic recollection of the town.  Despite not having returned since graduating high school, the memories of this unique waterworld remain vivid – a testament to the distinct charm of Sitangkai.

Sitangkai offers a glimpse into a different way of life in the Philippines, where daily routines are dictated by the tides and the sea is an integral part of the community's identity. Its unique location, cultural blend, and economic significance make it a truly remarkable place.
