North Korea warns retaliation after South warning shots

A day after South Korean Navy fired warning shots at North Korean boat, North military General staff said from now on it would open fire without warning at any South Korean ships if they intrude "even 0.001 millimeter" into disputed waters in the Yellow Sea.

The two vessels from the North retreated about eight minutes after the SOuth Korean navy fired five 40 mm artillery shots, officials told Reuters.

The North Korean boats had crossed the Northern Limit Line, said South Korean military. But, North accused the South Navy of intruding into its waters and said the South fired at is ships in a "grave provocative act," the Supreme Command of the North's Korean People's Army was quoted as saying by the official KCNA news agency.

"The provocation-makers are going to regret for ever horrible the aftermath of their reckless firing first will be," North Korea said.

"They should be mindful that they would face our merciless retaliatory strikes anytime and at any place and in any way," it added.

In recent weeks, Pyongyang has been urging Seoul to accept leader Kim Jong-Un's proposal for military talks aimed at easing cross-border tensions.

Seoul has flatly rejected the offer, insisting that the North should first take a tangible step towards ending its nuclear weapons program.

A south Korean naval vessel fired warning shots Friday after a patrol boat from the North and fishing boat crossed the disputed sea border.
