Two F/A-18s fighter jet collided off coast of North Carolina

Two F/A-18 fighter jets from Virginia Beach crashed off the coast of North Carolina on Thursday morning. Fishing boat on the area rescued all four crew members, report said.


The two F/A-18F Super Hornets " were involved in a flight mishap" about 10:40 AM. A commercial fishing boat recovered two survivors from the water, while the Coast Guard plucked out the other two. All four are safely flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by Coast Guard helicopters.
The jets were assigned to the "Fighting Checkmates" of Strike Fighter Squadron which participating in a routine training mission off Cape Hatteras.

Coast Guard reported that the jets are collided, but later described it as a "mid-air mishap." The Navy are still conducting investigations, which typically takes several months.

The crew consists of a pilot and a weapons system operator. This is the second crash for the squadron in two years.
