Facebook and Microsoft to build underwater cable across the Atlantic for a faster data transfer

Facebook and Microsoft had announced an agreement to build an underwater cable  across the Atlantic. The new state-of-the-art sub-sea cable will help meet customer demand fro high speed, reliable connections for cloud and online services. The construction will start by August 2016 with completion expected in October 2017.


The collaboration of two online giant companies on this system in order to accelerate the development of the next-generation of Internet infrastructure and support to the rapid growth of their respective cloud and online services. The new "MAREA" cable will be the highest-capacity sub-sea cable to ever cross the Atlantic - eight fiber pairs and an initial estimated design capacity of 160Tbps.

The 6,600 km sub-sea cable will be operated and managed by Telxius, which will connect the United States to Southern Europe, from the data hub of Northern Virginia to Bilbao, Spain and to network hubs in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia.  

This new project is expected to bring significant benefits for customers: lower costs and easier equipment upgrades which leads to faster growth in bandwidth rate since the system can evolve at the pace of optical technology innovation.
