Sikh man hailed after breaking religious rules to save drowning dog

A Sikh man in India has been hailed as a hero after saving a dog from drowning by using his turban.

As seen in a one-minute-and-eight-second video uploaded in Youtube, 28-year-old Sarwan Singh spotted a crowd of onlookers looking at the stricken animal as he was driving past an irrigation canal in India's Punjab region, according to a report on UK-based Independent.com.

He stopped his car to check and saw a dog struggling in the water." I was shocked to see that there was a dog drowning but no was actually helping,"he was quoted in the report as saying.

Singh admitted that he could not swim well enough to save the dog, so he figured using his turban to reach for it instead.

"The moment I started taking off my turban, people watching around were shocked. They thought I was disrespecting my faith, but what was important at that point was to save the animal's life." Singh said.
