Mayor Isidro Zayco calls NEDA to help push the construction of Kabankalan Airport

Kabankalan City Mayor Isidro Zayco seek the help of Negros Island Regional Development Council(NIRDC) members, especially the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) to speed up the construction of city's airport during a meeting held in Kabankalan City on Wednesday,  SunStar report.

The 105-hectare Kabankalan airport has raised its concern since 2007, and has previously approved by RDC-6 and forwarded to NEDA. Until now there is no update yet on the status of the project,  Zayco said.

"The project will surely provide additional accessibility especially when the regional centers in Kabankalan will start its operation," the mayor said.

The city government is willing to enter into a 60-40 sharing scheme with the provincial government to finance the development of the airport's runway which may cost P100 million.

According to Neda-18 Regional Director Efren Carreon who presided the meeting said that the cost estimates will be more or less completed, they will include the matter on the agenda of the infrastructure Committee meeting.

"There is a need for a revised and updated study as some of its parts maybe outmoded already," Carreon said

Former Negros Occidental Governor Rafael Coscolluela who is also present in the said meeting, said that updating the data is necessary as it might be required when the city or province has to ask for external funding.

If the Kabankalan City airport will pushes through, these will be the second in Negros Occidental, next to Bacolod-Silay International Airport and third in the region.

Meanwhile, as Kabankalan City poised to become economic center of Region 18, Mayor Isidro Zayco said that the 500-hectare area inside the Central Philippines State University (CPSU) in Barangay Tagukon to be used as site for the regional offices is expected to attract more and bigger investments.

Through the regional center, Kabankalan is expected to cater to millions in the domestic market, he added.
