July 6 is National Holiday in celebration of Eid'l Fitr

Manila, Philippines - In observance of Eid'l Fitr or the Feast of Ramadan, Malacanang is expected to declare July 6 as national holiday.

Republic Act No. 9177, signed into law in November 2002 during the Arroyo administration, declares the first day of Shawwai, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar, a national holiday for the observance of Eidul Fitr.

During an interview at DzRB, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said an official announcement may be issued on Monday or Tuesday.

"Napag-usapan namin iyan ni Executive Secretary (Salvador) Medialdea at ito po ay sa July 6. Pero hintayin nalng po natin 'yung opisyal na announcement ngayong darating na Lunes or Martes po," he told dzRB.

However, this day is dependent on the Islamic calendar.

according to RA 9177, " the approximate date of these Islamic holidays may be determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar (Hijra) or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient."
