President Duterte to end joint US military exercise in disputed water

President Duterte said on Wednesday that these will be the last joint military exercises which is scheduled next month between the US and the Philippines during his speech with the Filipino community in Vietnam. 

"I will serve notice to you now that this will be the last military exercise,” Mr. Duterte said to an audience of some 350 Filipinos in Hanoi, where he is on a two-day state visit to Vietnam. Still, the Philippine leader reaffirmed that his country’s cooperation with the U.S. stands.

 “I will maintain the military alliance—the RP-US pact, which our countries signed in the early 50s,” Mr. Duterte said.

The Philippines and United States are set to hold the 33rd iteration of the Philippine Amphibious Landing Exercise (PHIBLEX 33) on October 4 to 12.The Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine Marine Corps will be joining with the US MArines and Sailors from the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade and Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group.

The exercise will include an approximately 1,400 US servicemen based in Okinawa, Japan and 500 AFP personnel working side-by-side to enhance capabilities and better coordination.

However, Duterte noted that he will continue to respect treaties with the United States.
