Philippines to buy Russian made MI17 helicopters

Manila,Philippines - DND is set to purchase four helicopters from Russia to improve the country's capability against possible internal and external threats, Manila Standard report.

The Philippines is mulling to purchase MI17 or MI24 helicopters worth between $12 million and $ 17 million. This is in line with President Rodrigo Duterte's focus, to buy more helicopters capable on day and night mission.

“We are looking of purchasing two to four MI17 or MI24. This is in line with President Rodrigo Duterte’s focus is more on internal security than external,” the source, who asked for anonymity, told the Manila Standard.

Report said that this helicopters are designed to withstand to any kind of weather and are said to be low maintenance. It has a defensive capabilities against portable surface-to-air attacks.

Aside from the military equipment and technology, both countries have discussed possible cooperation on training, after sales and maintenance. Earlier, President Rodrigo Duterte said that if Washington continues to refuse to sell weapons to the country, he can turn to Russia and China.
