A 6.2 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia

A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake rattled Indonesia today September 1, 2017. The quake hit the sea off Sumatra which is a large Indonsian Island west of Java at a depth of 49km according to the US Geological Survey. Shaking cause by the quake was felt as far away as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Indonesia has experience frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where tectonic plates collide.
