Beijing-based restaurant Xiabu Xiabu loses $190 M after woman found dead rat in hot pot

The Beijing-based restaurant Xiabu Xiabu reportedly lost millions of dollars after a pregnant woman found a dead rat in its hot pot. The discovery at one of the chain's outlet in Weifang, Shandong province on Sept. 6 prompted massive backlash after its manager offered the woman 20,000 yuan (2,900) so she can opt for an abortion.

However, they refused to accept the money as one of them, a woman surnamed Gao, is pregnant and thought that she needed to undergo a medical check-up before agreeing to terms. Upon learning by the owner, the offer was raised to 20,000 yuan ($2,900) that shocked the group for her abortion.

After that, then no agreement was made.

The issue was then brought to the Kuiwen District Market Supervision Bureau, which immediately sent officers to an onsite inspection, report said.

As a result of the incident, Xiabu Xiabu's stock price dipped nearly 12.5% by Sept. 11, its lowest point in almost a year, the New York Times reported.

Xiabu Xiabu is a popular hot pot restaurant across China, is determined to get to the bottom of the incident. "We have set up a task force to carry out an in-depth investigation into this incident, and will also invite thisrd-party authorities to help us clarify the truth," representtive Catherine Gao told NY Times.
