Finally, the University of the Philippines Mindanao (UPMin) has the first ever summa cum laude to graduate since its establishment in 1995. Pete Maverick Nicole Estudillo, a Food Technology student scored a cumulative weighted average grade (CWAG) of 1.1971, the highest record in the university history.
"Summa is just a bonus and summa is really not for me. It's for UPMin," the 22-year-old Estudillo told MindaNews.
“When the honor was given to me, I felt happy for UPMin. That the hope that has long been in the hearts of the alumni and the profs, that we’ll have a summa, has finally come and I was happy that I get to be the answer to their prayers,” she added.
She really wasn't expecting to graduate with the highest grade when she entered UP. Passing only the subject would be enough since she considered UP College Admissions Test (UPCAT) to be the hardest exam in the country.
It was on her third year in college when she realized that she could have the chance to graduate with highest honors. This sparked her interest to achieve the title, but never to serious on the idea - thankful to what will she achieve after four years.
She look for the possible ways to lessen the fruit wastes generated every year by converting its peels, seeds, and cores into functional food as her advocacy. Her study entitled antioxidant and Anticancer Potential of Artocarpus Fruit Wastes are set to present at the Department of Science and technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) in July.
Aside from the highest recognition from UP community, she was also active to community service as member of Rotaract Club of UPLim, UPMin Koro Kantahanay, PSALM Ministry of UPMin, For the Unity and Solidarity of Every Student in UP (FUSE UP), and Let’s Do It Philippines Youth – Davao.
Estudillo will march with highest honor on June 21, to mark UP Mindanao's 22nd Commencement Exercises.
