Chlorinated pools can turn sunscreen into TOXIC cancer-causing chemicals on your skin

Swimming on a chlorinated pool while slathering sunscreen on your skin could put your health at risk, according to new study.

The study found that chlorinated water and UV rays from the sun break down a compound in the creams into toxic chemicals, as Russian scientist discover the destructive effects of chlorine in swimming pools on sunscreen.

Lomonosov Moscow State University researchers have discovered that the world's most popular active sunscreen ingredients, avobenzone, breaks down compound into something harmful in chlorinated water.

Avobenzone, the most popular sun-blocker in the world is also used in lipsticks, creams, moisturizers and other cosmetics has the ability to absorb damaging.

Two of the chemicals it produces upon mixing with the water are phenols and acetyl benzenes -  particularly toxic. This reaction takes place on your wet skin when the sunscreen reacts to UV radiation and chlorinated water, and the chemicals have been linked to problems like immune system damage, infertility, and cancer.

“A generally safe compound transforms in the water and forms more dangerous products,” researcher Dr. Albert Lebedev said.
