Inspired by the goal of Mayor Jerry Treñas to level up Iloilo City, the Christmas lantern committee, organized under Executive Order No. 67 dated September 2, also levelled up its preparations for this ambitious project.

Dr. Sandra Sarabia Gomez, Chairman of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Iloilo Chapter, is at the helm of the organizing committee, composed of the following members: PCCI-Iloilo President Atty. Jobert Peñaflorida and Board of Directors, Ms. Maritess Lim, Mr. Vincent Abellar and Ms. Alma May Tayo, together with Ms. Vidette Ong of the Zonta Club of Iloilo City II.

The support group is composed of City Tourism Officer Junel Ann Divinagracia, City Engineer’s Office in-charge Engr. Salvador Pedregosa and Jail Superintendent Mary Chanette Espartero, warden of Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Iloilo City.

The project has also benefited some 100 BJMP inmates in Brgy. Ungka, Jaro, who have specially crafted the parols.

This will translate to a brighter Christmas for them and their families as the project has provided them a good source of livelihood since they began working on the parols in September 2019.

The Christmas Lantern Committee is especially thankful to all members of the private sector who have generously supported the project, enabling it to exceed its initial target of 1,000 lanterns.

Likewise, it is extending its appreciation to the hardworking team of City Engineer’s Office and Task Force Boltahe who has worked round-the-clock on the installation.

This early, the spectacle of the beautiful parols lining up the streets has impressed locals and tourists alike, and has created a positive buzz in social media.

There have been requests to keep the parols until end of January 2020 as the city welcomes its guests for the much-anticipated Iloilo Dinagyang Festival and Chinese New Year celebration.
