The public are advice to use surgical masks, not N95 masks, to guard against Wuhan coronavirus spread: Experts

N95 masks have been flying off the shelves since Taal volcano erupted, and the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak are again another challenge that is feared to transfer from person-to-person.

But there is no need to panic, expert said that N95 masks is not needed to guard against Wuhan virus, instead, surgical masks are more appropriate in this case, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said as reported in the Straitstimes.

"The general advice is that if a person falls sick, they should wear a surgical face mask, not an N95 mask," he said.

Surgical masks are meant to help block large-particle droplets and splatter from reaching the mouth and nose. 

N95 masks are designed to filter airborne particles and have been used during the Taal volcano eruption to protect people from deadly ashfall.

Since Taal volcano erupted it was reported that N95 filter masks which usually cost only from P25 to P30 now being sold for as high as P200.

The deadly Wuhan virus now reportedly killed at least 17 people and infected nearly 600 people in China, prompting China to shut down all urban transport networks and suspend outgoing flights from the city.
