At least 44 people were killed from alcohol poisoning and several others have been hospitalized after consuming industrial-grade ethanol and methanol, USA Today reported.
A misleading rumor has spread throughout the country that drinking alcohol can cure and kill coronavirus.
“Some of the citizens of Ahwaz had heard that drinking alcohol could help them fight the coronavirus, so they used it as a preventive measure,” said Ali Ehsanpour, spokesman of Ahwaz University of Medical Sciences, according to the Mehr News Agency.
More than 200 are reported hospitalized in Khuzestan alone, according to the Iranian Labour News Agency.
Iran is the Middle Eastern country which has been hit hard by the coronavirus with more than 8K confirmed cases and at least 291 deaths as of Tuesday.
