2 killed, 1 critical after drinking DIY alcohol mix of vinegar, coffee, toothpaste and paint thinner

Two men were killed and another one was in critical condition after drinking a mixture of denatured alcohol or paint thinner, toothpaste, coffee, vinegar, and water amid the enhanced community quarantine and liquor ban.

The fatalities were identified as Rainer Mariano and Quirino Lagrimas, 52. Meanwhile, Dande Curocoto, 36, is under observation at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH).

According to the initial report by the Manila Police District (MPD), prior to the incident the three had been drinking alcohol several days ago and when they were not satisfied, they added paint thinner to the DIY alcohol mix on Sunday night.

Denatured alcohol, commonly used as paint thinner, is ethyl alcohol that is unfit for human consumption due to added chemicals that make it poisonous. Drinking it can lead to system and organ damage and death, reports showed.

Manila had imposed a city-wide liquor ban from March 30 amid the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor Franciso "Isko" Moreno signed the executive order that prohibits the selling and distribution of any alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine.
