COVID-19 survivors donate blood to help critically ill patients

The Philippine General Hospital (PGH) is set to commence convalescent plasma therapy, which uses antibodies from the blood of cured patients to treat critically ill COVID-19 cases.

At least three out of 124 coronavirus survivors in the country have so far decided to donate their blood in high hopes that this will help cure other patients.

"On April 9, 2020 (Araw ng Kagitingan), the first three brave and healthy COVID-19 Filipino survivors generously donated their blood for the Convalescent Plasma Therapy vs. COVID-19 ," Dr. Jonas Del Rosario said in a Facebook post.

"They rose above the stigma and showed the world that their plasma is a gift of life. We need more donors," he added.

President Rodrigo Duterte recently called on the survivors to donate their blood for other patients.

Senators Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara, Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri, and actress Iza Calzado are all survivors of the disease, had already expressed their willingness to donate their plasma.

The country has 4,076 COVID-19 cases so far, with 203 deaths and 124 recoveries.

COVID-19 survivors who wish to donate their blood may contact 155-200 or visit the PGH's Facebook page for more details.
