England's Beauty Queen Bhasha Mukherjee Turns Covid-19 Doctor

The reigning Miss England, Bhasha Mukherjee is responding the call for her country as she returned back home from overseas charity work to serve as a doctor amid the coronavirus pandemic.

After winning a crown back in August 2019, the 24-year-old Kolkata-born is due to start at Boston Pilgrim Hospital, Lincoinshire.

"I've been to Africa, Turkey, and India was the first of the Asian countries I was going to travel to. After India, I had several other countries that had to be cut short because of obviously the coronavirus. I knew the best place for me would be back at the hospital,"  Mukherjee said in an interview with Fox News.

It all started when Mukherjee's friends started messaging her at the Pilgrim Hospital in England while she was in India for humanitarian trip.

"I could not be prouder to be both Miss England and to serve something of great national pride like the NHS," Bhasha tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.

Mukherjee expressed that it felt wrong to be wearing her Miss England crown as the world is fighting with a deadly pandemic. "When you are doing all this humanitarian work abroad, you're still expected to put the crown on, get ready... look pretty."

"I felt a sense of this is what I'd got this degree for and what better time to be part of this particular sector than now. It was incredible tha way the whole world was celebrating all key workers, and I wanted to be one of those, and I knew I could help. There's no better time for me to be Miss England and helping England at a time of need."
