DepEd plans to move opening of classes for SY 2020-2021 in August



Manila, Philippines - Due to the threat of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday said that the opening of classes for school year 2020-2021 may be moved in August instead of June.

The decision was based to the ongoing consultations with the  department to different advisers, management committee, business sectors, teachers and other stakeholders according to DepEd Secretary Briones.

DepEd is conducting survey to get the opinion from different sectors about the preferred opening of classes and it came out among the 700,000 respondents, it suggested August, Briones said as quoted from GMA news.


However, Briones stressed that DepEd will also be awaiting the recommendations of the government's COVID-19 task force regarding the status of the imposed enhanced community quarantine in several regions in the country.

Meanwhile, Briones had encouraged students to continue their learning in June as the department offers an online educational platform supporting alternative learning modules.

Update as of May 5: "Ang napili nating school opening date ay August 24," Education Secretary Leonor Briones said in a virtual press briefing.
