NTC orders ABS-CBN to stop broadcast operations

The National Telecommunications Commission on Tuesday issued a Cease and Desist Order against ABS-CBN after its legislative franchise renewal had expired on May 4.

In the order dated May 5, the NTC directed ABS-CBN to halt its television and radio broadcasting operations nationwide.

ABS-CBN was also given 10 days to explain to explain why the frequencies assigned to it should not be recalled.

There are 42 television stations across the country were affected, including the flagship Channel 2, 10, 18 FM stations and 5 AM stations, including DZMM radio, ABS-CBN reports.

The NTC cited Radio Control Law or Republic Act No. 3846 which states that "no person, firm, company, association, or corporation shall construct, install, establish, or operate a radio transmitting station, or a radio receiving station used for commercial purposes, or a radio broadcasting station, without having first obtained a fanchise therefor from the Congress of the Philippines.

"“Upon expiration of RA 7966, ABS-CBN no longer has a valid and subsisting congressional franchise as required by Act No. 3846.”

The order came after Solicitor General Jose Calida warned NTC commissioners against granting ABS-CBN provisional permit to operate while franchise is pending in Congress.
