OFWs Cry Foul, Appeal To Remove PhilHealth's Mandatory 3% Premium Payment From Their Salary

Filipino Overseas Workers (OFWs), dubbed as the 'modern heroes' joined together in an online petition urging the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) to withdraw its memorandum to increase the mandatory contribution to 3% of their monthly salary for the year 2020.

As of this posting on May 3, 10PM, the group named OFWs that started a petition on Change.org entitled, "Remove Philhealth Mandatory 3% Premium Payment from OFW's salary" has already gained 338,496 petitioners.

"I believe that we OFWs and our dependents have been already struggling amidst this Pandemic and yet Philhealth had issued a very unfair memo regarding premium payments.  I believe that this is already too much of them to ask for an interest rate and a penalty which is very unfair and inhumane for those who travel away from their families to work," the petition reads.

One of the petitioner said: "I am signing because I feel thatthis will just put additional burden on the finances of OFWs. Aside from the fact that they do not enjoy the benefits of being a member of Philhealth when they get sick while employed abroad."

"I’m signing this because I don’t agree with the mandatory contribution. I’m already paying insurance for me and my family here in the country where I reside, why would I be mandated to pay insurance in the Philippines if I wouldn’t be able to use it!!!," other one said.

The memorandum took effect on April 22, after it was first published in newspaper and PhilHealth Facebook page.
