Researchers found new swine flu in pigs in China with human pandemic potential

China researchers found new strain of flu that has potential to become pandemic. According to reports, this new found virus G4 EA H1N1 is similar to swine flu carried by pigs, but it has a potential to infect humans.

Scientists at Chinese universities and China's Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) took 30,000 nasal swabs from pigs in slaughterhouses in 10 Chinese provinces between 2011 and 2018, allowing them to detect a new virus.

They said the new findings has been dominant among pigs since 2016. One of 10 pig farm workers tested also an elevated levels of the virus in their blood, particularly those aged 18 to 35 years old.

Experts write in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that measures to control the virus in pigs, and the close monitoring of swine industry workers, should be swiftly implemented.

Researchers were concerned the virus could mutate, so that it can pass from human and spark a global outbreak.
