Man spends around P200,000 for a gold face mask during pandemic

A man in India has paid thousands of dollars for his customized gold face mask to protect him against COVID-19.

Shankar Kurhade, a 49-year-old Indian businessman went viral after spending $4000 (around P200,000) for his pricey precious gold face mask.

According to Kurhade, the mask weighs 50 grams (1.8 ounces). He decided to have one gold face mask after seeing another man online who has a silver face mask.

Despite gaining online attention, Kurhade, whose company makes industrial sheds, told Indian Express that he “didn’t do it for publicity.”

“I am not sure if it will be effective to protect me from a coronavirus infection,” he admitted to AFP.

But the businessman said he's "taking other precautions."

“It is not the gold or cloth mask, but social distancing and hand washing that will protect human beings from coronavirus,” he told the Indian Express.

India is the second country in the world with highest rate of COVID-19 cases.
