A family of nine dies after eating homemade noodles left in freezer

 Nine family members have died of food poisoning after eating noodle soup containing a cornmeal, which had been frozen for a year.





The the thick noodle soup was a popular local delicacy in north-east China in Heilongjiang province were 12 people had a family gathering on 5th October.







Three young members refused to continue eating because of its stranger taste, according to local news. However, the nine continue to satisfy there cravings until they fell ill hours later, eight of them was confirmed dead in October 11. Meanwhile, a 47-year-old woman was treated in a hospital, but also died.



Authorities said that the family members died of food poisoning after a high concentration of bongkrek acid in the noodle soup which is possibly cause by a fermented flour products. 





The toxin was also found in the gastric fluid of the victim - a respiratory toxin produced by bacteria found in the meal.



Eating food contaminated with bongkrek acid is said to be fatal, according to Gao Fei, director of food safety at the Heilongjiang Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.



"It can cause serious damage to many human organs including the liver, kidneys, heart, and brain," Gao told China News Service.



"Currently, there is no specific antidote. Once poisoned, the fatality rate can be as high as 40 per cent to 100 per cent."





In China and Indonesia, bongkrek acid has been implicated in outbreaks of foodborne illness involving coconut and corn-based food products.



Even with thorough cooking, the acid cannot be removed, and the Global Times reports there is no medicine to treat such cases of poisoning.
