Philippines approves Russia's Sputnik V for emergency use

Russia's Sputnik V has received greenlight from the Philippine government for emergency use, the Food and Drug Administration said on Friday as the country fights a renewed spike in virus infections.

Sputnik V developed by Gamaleya Institute is the fourth to get emergency use authorization in the Philippines.

“The known and potential benefits of the Gamaleya Sputnik V vaccine...outweigh the known and potential risks of said vaccine,” FDA chief Rolando Enrique Domingo told a news conference.

Russia's jabs has touted as the first in the world, were 91.6% effective against COVID-19, clinical trials showed. The Philippines announced earlier this week that it will close its borders to foreigners beginning March 20 and limit entry to its own citizens in hope to halt the spread of new cases. Several areas in Metro Manila specifically is under the localized lockdown.

According to Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), there are already 52 countries with a combined population of 1.4 billion people have approved Sputnik V for use.
