The Philippines said it would temporarily ban foreigners and Filipinos who are not overseas workers from entering the country as it tightens its borders following the detection of a new, highly infectious variants of the coronavirus.
The entry ban will run from 12:01 A.M. of March 20 to April 19, the NTF said in a memorandum. Earlier, health secretary Francisco Duque had warned that COVID cases in the country may surpass the peak recorded in 2020, unless the surge is stopped.
The following are exempted from the ban:
- Holders of 9(c) visas
- Medical repatriation and their escort/s duly endorsed by the Department of Foreign Affairs-Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers (DFA-OUMWA) or the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.
- Distressed returning overseas Filipinos duly endorsed by the DFA-OUMWA.
- Emergency, humanitarian, and other analogous cases approved by the NTF COVID-19.
