Palawan will remain as one province, 'No' votes win

The majority of Palaweños have voted 'No' to split the island into three provinces, it means Palawan will remain as one province.







On Tuesday, the Commission on Elections announced that the Provincial Board of Canvassers (PBOC) finally proclaimed the official but partial results of the Palawan Plebiscite. The remaining five of 23 municipal canvass reports is expected to finish it canvassing very soon.







Based on the official partial results, 172,304 people voted 'No" for the ratification of Republic Act (RA) 11259, or the Act Dividing the Province of Palawan into three provinces namely: Palawan Oriental, Palawan del Norte, and Palawan del Sur.





Meanwhile, 122,223 others voted "yes," with a difference of 50,081 votes.





“On the basis of the foregoing, we hereby proclaim to ratify the division of the province of Palawan pursuant to Republic Act No. 11259 was rejected and disapproved on the basis of the votes cast in the province of Palawan on March 13, 2021,” the PBOC said in the decision.





Comelec Commissioner Antonio Kho said the COC from Kalayaan Island is supposed to arrive on Wednesday due to constant rains. However, the votes from Kalayaan Island will no longer affect the result of the Palawan plebiscite.





He thanked the people who participated and those who assisted them in holding the referendum.
