One of the world's billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda have announced their divorce after 27 years of marriage, saying "we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple."
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” a joint statement read. “Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives."
But the couple say they will continue to work together at the Bil & Melinda Gates Foundation.
“We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we can no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.”
they first met during a business dinner in 1987, when Melinda was a product manager at Microsoft. Then they got married seven years later.
Other details about their financial have not been revealed. Both Gateses have signed on to Warren Buffet's Giving Pledge, promising to donate most of their fortune to charitable causes.
The separation statement from them likely surprises many who knows them as philanthropists.
