Following claims from the group of Filipino students and alumni from the United Kingdom-based university that presidential aspirant Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. had misrepresented his Oxford education, a statement from Marco's chief of staff lawyer Vic Rodriguez says the latter has been honest about his diploma from the prestigious institution.
"We stand by the Degree confirmation which was issued by the University of Oxford. It is up to anyone to question or challenge this with the said university if they so please," said Rodriguez.
"Presidential aspirant Bongbong Marcos has always been forthright on his conferment of a special diploma in social studies by the distinguish (sic) university and has been never misrepresented his Oxford education," he added.
Rodriguez also attached a copy of the "Degree Confirmation" issued on March 31, 2015 by M.D. Sibly, deputy registration of Oxford University. The certificate appeared that Marcos received a Special Diploma in Social Studies and completed the program from October 1, 1975 to July 1, 1978.
The Oxford Philippines Society composed of Filipino students and alumni of the university recently issued statement that the Special Diploma that Marcos holds is not indicated of a higher course of education. The group also explained that it "is not a political statement' as it was aimed to just clarify matters.
"We would like to emphasize that this statement is not a political statement. We are making this statement in aid of public discourse in a time where disinformation and fake news are prevalent," the group said.
"A special diploma is not a degree, and neither is it comparable, superior nor equivalent to one. A special diploma is not a course of higher education leading to an undergraduate or first degree or even a master's degree," it added.
