Facebook introduces 'META' to take us all into the metaverse

Facebook is rebranding, and Mark Zuckerberg said the company changed its name to Meta, sending its billions of users from social-media platform into an online digital realms known as the metaverse.

"Over time I hope our company will be seen as metaverse company," Facebook Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said. He introduced the name, formally Meta Platforms Inc. which includes Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other products during annual developer event.

What is the mataverse?

Metaverse is a broad term, according to the NY post. 'It generally refers to shared virtual world environment which people can access via internet.'

It can refer to digital spaces which are made more lifelike by the use of virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR). Others would describe it as a gaming world, in which others can interact and walk around with other players.

We have also seen fully-fledged metaverses in science fiction books and films.

"I think that there was just a lot of confusion and awkwardness about having the company brand be also the brand of one of the social media apps," he said. "I think it's helpful for people to have a relationship with a company that is different from the relationship with any specific one of the products, that can kind of supersede all of that," Zuckerberg said.
