WOMAN SURVIVES FROM FIRE FINDS HOPE THROUGH TIKTOK

Joanna Sisracon spent almost the rest of her life navigating a reality few of us can imagine.

She was just 5-months old when she was caught on fire, helpless, and was crying in an extreme pain. The incident happened when Joanna was entrusted in the care of her brother as her mother was forced to leave the house and try to get some cash for their food on that day. Unfortunately, baby Joanna might have crawled and tipped over the kerosene and burn herself after her brother attended their farm animals that had gotten loose.

The accident left side of Joanna's face completely burned, thankfully she survived. As times goes by she started going to school and still faces lots of challenges as she was teased for her appearance. Her mother told Manila Bulletin that their family received the worst insults and vulgar names from others, "Palagi iyan umiiyak kapag umuwi galing school."

It was a very difficult journey in the life of Joanna where she even involved herself in self-loathing. She question God about her situation that many people could be so mean and hurtful.

The journey of recovery has been filled with emotional and physical pain, guilt, faith. Now, Joanna decided to learn how to apply makeup to protect herself from public scrutiny. And through the TikTok app she was able to show to the world herself as a burn survivor and slowly began changing her life. Her videos which she uploaded in July 2021 has began to gain traction, attracting over 500,000 followers on the platform.

One of her TikTok video to date has earned 31.8 million hits, where she asks followers to "stop bullying please" while showing the traces on her head. Joanna learned that it's possible to be accepted for who she is after all.
