WILL SMITH RESIGNS FROM OSCARS ACADEMY DAYS AFTER SLAPPING CHRIS ROCK

Will Smith resigned from the Academy almost a week after slapping comedian  Chris Rock at the Oscars stage.

Smith, who won the best actor award for "King Richard" said, "I betrayed the trust of the Academy." Adding that, "I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken."

Academy President David Rubin said Friday the group  had accepted the resignation and was planning to move forward with its disciplinary proceedings.

It can be recalled that Smith shocked the world in the star-studded event on Sunday, March 27, when he took to the stage and slapped Chris Rock on the face after the comedian joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair loss at the Oscars 2022.

Pinkett Smith revealed in 2018 that she had been diagnosed with alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss. And the film "G.I. Jane" stars Demi Moore as a woman who shaves her head during military service.

"I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate," he said.

"I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film," He added.
