Public school teachers will receive a P5,000 cash allowance from the Department of Education (DepEd) upon the opening of classes on Monday, August 22.
According to DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa, all teachers will receive a cash allowance to help them equip for the opening of classes.
“Lahat po ng teachers, makakatanggap. Ibababa po iyan sa, I think, mga school division. I’ll confirm [the details] pero lahat po ay makatatanggap by August 22 noong P5,000 cash allowance,” he said during a joint press conference with the Office of the Vice President.
Poa clarified to reporters that the allowance would be released within the first week of classes.
The additional funding is separate from the Schools' Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE).
"May nagsasabi pinangbibili nila ng chalk, hindi po dapat 'yun kasi that should be part of MOOE ng schools. Ito po ay lalo na sa mga kailangan ng internet connection d'yan po parang additional allowance lang talaga for teachers," DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa said.
The release of a cash allowance is to make sure that the teachers are fully equipped with equipment, especially for the minimum health and safety standards to be observed such as alcohol.
It's not specifically to ask the teachers to buy face masks that are from MOOE already.
"We're giving them the flexibility to buy whatever they need," Poa said.
Poa counted that a total of ₱3.7 billion have been transferred to public schools as additional MOOE to ensure they are well-equipped to implement health protocols, such as buying COVID-19-related items like face masks and alcohol.
