KWP: DEPED TO REVOKE AND STOP THE USE OF TERM "FILIPINAS"

Before the celebration of Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa finally concluded, the Department of Education issued a memorandum, also in accordance with the "Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino" or KWF, regarding its decision to stop the use of "Filipinas" and to recover the adopted decision group of commissioners.

According to Departmental Memorandum No. 074 series 2022, the commission decided to withdraw the decision of the board of commissioners No. 13-19 series 2013 replacing the letter “F” with the letter “P” of the Philippines, as well as with the “Filipino” designation for citizens.

According to the memo, it is necessary to return the use of "Filipinas" in the name of the country and "Filipino" for the citizens, because according to the Constitution, this is the official name of the country.

There is no need to change printed materials that use the words "Filipinas" and "Filipino" such as books, self-learning modules, weekly home learning plans, learning activity sheets, and other types of reading materials. The teachers and staff are supposed to correct these things while using them in the teaching process.

The correct spelling prescribed by the KWF is also encouraged in educational materials and correspondence that will be officially released soon.

The memo was sent to bureau directors, regional directors, school administrators, and heads of public and private schools.

The origin of this idea was during the time of the National Scholar of Literary Arts, Virgilio Almario who was the former Chief Commissioner of KWF because, during the Spanish era, the name of the country was spelled and pronounced as "Filipinas".

Although KWF has not been strict in using "Filipinas" instead of "Pilipinas" and "Filipino" instead of "Pilipino", many teachers, linguists, professionals, and staff have used it.
