METEORITE THAT HIT A HOUSE IN CAGAYAN VALLEY IS OFFICIALLY DECLARED AS THE 7TH SPACE ROCK

A space rock that struck a house in the Quirino province of the Cagayan Valley was officially announced as the 7th Philippine meteorite, according to the global database of meteorites, Meteoritical Bulletin Database.

It was named after the barangay in the town of Nagtipunan, Ponggo, where the rock landed. The 2.4-kilogram space rock hit the house on May 20 at 4PM.

The solid rock smashed the two layers of roof before hitting the plastic plant pot, creating a palm-sized dent/crater on the concrete floor.

People in the vicinity heard three consecutive sonic booms before impact, but no smoke was observed.

The first person who discovered the rock did not touch  the chunk right after it landed since it appeared too hot.

Four Filipino meteorite collectors Christian Cruz, Ramon Santiago, David Joshua Magno, and Allen Yu were able to collect samples and identify their properties.

"PONGGO METEORITE is now officially registered as the 7th Philippine meteorite in the Meteoritical Bulletin Database, an international publication that provides authoritative information about confirmed meteorites. This is the first well-documented Philippine meteorite hammer fall, which fell on May 20, 2022 and violently struck man-made objects (two layers of roof, a plant pot, and a concrete floor)," said Cruz in his social media post.
