UC ENGINEERING STUDENT DIED IN TAU GAMMA HAZING

Authorities are investigating the death of a second-year marine engineering student of the University of Cebu (UC) in Cebu City after it was allegedly died due to hazing.

The report came after the death of John Matthew Salilig, whose body was found in a shallow pit in Cavite last February 28, or 10 days after he informed his elder brother that he was attending a welcome party for Tau Gamma's new recruits in Binan City, Laguna province. He is a 24-year-old chemical engineering student of Adamson University.

Meanwhile, Ronnel Baguio, 20, is said to be a neophyte of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity in Cebu City. Baguio passed away last December 19, 2022 more than a week after he allegedly undergone from initiation rites.

The cause of his death was cause by "severe acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to indirect lung injury and acute kidney injury secondary to rhabdomyolysis."

His mother, Leny Baguio, who sought assistance from the Public Attorney's Office said that he sent money to Ronnel for his medical consultation after her son  complained of stomach pain, headaches, and vomiting with blood. But little did she know that her son joined a fraternity.

She flew from Bataan to Cebu but she wasn't able to see her son alive.

Based on the initial investigations, the hazing happened on December 18, 2022 and it appeared that an instructor of UC allegedly involved in the initiation rites. He was rushed to Cebu Medical Center but on December 19, 2022 at 5AM, the doctor declared him dead.

The Department of Justice had instructed the NBI to simultaneously investigate the alleged two hazing incident.
